The Scenic Route: Exploring the Mississippi in Little Falls, MN

Cruise the Great River Road: Little Falls Edition
Little Falls is known for many things—its vibrant art scene, rich history, and delicious local eats—but one of its most prestigious features is its place along the Great River Road (GRR).
Whether you’re a local looking for a Sunday drive or a traveler on a cross-country trek, the segment of the GRR that winds through Little Falls offers some of the most scenic and storied views in the Midwest. Grab your keys, round up your favorite people, and let’s hit the road!

What is the Great River Road?
The Great River Road is a legendary National Scenic Byway that follows the course of the Mississippi River from its headwaters at Lake Itasca, MN, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
- The Journey: Stretching 3,000 miles across 10 states.
- The Minnesota Leg: 565 miles of the route are right here in Minnesota!
- How to Find It: Just look for the iconic green and white signs featuring a pilot’s wheel and a riverboat.
Pro-Tip: Stop by the Little Falls Area Chamber & Tourism office to pick up a physical map to help guide your journey.

A Designated Stop: The Charles Lindbergh House & Museum
The Great River Road is dotted with nearly 100 Interpretive Centers—sites recognized for their deep connection to the Mississippi River’s story. Little Falls is proud to host one of the most famous: The Charles Lindbergh House and Museum.
Long before he became a world-renowned aviator, Charles Lindbergh was a boy exploring the banks of the Mississippi right here in Little Falls. It was at this childhood home where he first looked up at the sky and fell in love with flight. Today, you can use interpretive signs to take a self-guided tour of the grounds and walk around the very home where his dreams took off.

Hidden Gems Along the Route
As you follow the river through our area, make sure to pull over for these unique landmarks:
- Blanchard Dam: Located just south of Little Falls, Blanchard Dam is a must-visit for nature lovers. You can hop onto the Soo Line Trail for a walk with a view or try your hand at hunting for Cross Rocks (also known as “fairy stones”). These rare, twinned staurolite crystals are found along the riverbanks and are often kept as good-luck charms!
- Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Memorial Museum: Perched on the banks of the Mississippi, this museum is the home of the Morrison County Historical Society. It’s a fantastic (and free!) stop to learn about the people and industries that shaped this region. The architecture and the river views from the grounds are worth the trip alone.
- Mill Park: Mill Park is a fascinating park in Little Falls. You can explore the ruins of the Hennepin Paper Company, which burned down in 2002, leaving behind spiral stairs and industrial structures. It also serves as a trailhead for the Camp Ripley Veterans State Trail, and as a key site for the Wayfinding Project, featuring installations that celebrate the history of Little Falls and the Native American people who first called this riverfront home.
