Join Curt Brown, author of Minnesota, 1918: When Flu, Fire, and War Ravaged the State and writer of the Star Tribune's Minnesota history column, as he explores this monumental year through individual and community stories from across the state of Minnesota.
While 118,000 Minnesotans were serving in the war effort at home and abroad, and citizens on the home front were subjected to loyalty tests and new depths of government surveillance, thousands more were being struck down by the influenza pandemic Then, in October, fires raged across 1,500 square miles in northeastern Minnesota, leaving thousands homeless and hundreds dead. How did the state and its people face these challenges?
