Summer Reading Program at Great River Regional Library |
Great River Regional Library (GRRL) will begin its annual Summer Reading Program (SRP) for children and teens ages 0-18 on Monday, June 14, continuing through August 14. Registration takes place at GRRL branch libraries beginning June 14. The goal of the SRP is to encourage reading and to keep young readers reading during the summer months. Studies show that children who enroll in library summer reading programs maintain or improve their reading skills more than those who do not. They become better readers, and that influences their success as adults. A recent report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation draws a direct line between reading and the nation’s long-term economic well-being, and recommends that children participate in summer activities that protect against summer learning loss. All 32 branch libraries in GRRL will offer summer programs aimed at three different age groups, 0 to 3, 3 to 12, and grades 6 to 12. Three-year-olds and 11to14-year-olds may choose which program they would like to be in, but participants may only be in one SRP. The programs are: “Make a Splash – Read to Me” for children from 0-3 The 0-3 program for babies and toddlers prepares children for continued success through the development of early language skills. Parents receive a Read-to-Me booklet and activities to do with their children. When all the activities are completed, the child receives a prize for successfully finishing the program. It’s a program designed to help kids develop the first and essential building blocks to literacy such as letter knowledge and vocabulary. “Make a Splash – Read” for children ages 3-12 The 3-12 program provides children with a goal of nine hours of reading. The time is broken into 20 minute segments they mark off on a reading record. When the reading record is completed, the child receives a prize for successfully finishing the program. “Make Waves @ Your Library” for teens in grades 6-12 The teen program asks teens to track their reading in 30-minute segments which they mark on coupons they then enter for local and regional incentive drawings. The activities, prizes and supporting programs and parties provided by branch libraries are designed to keep kids involved and to make the experience one they’ll enjoy returning to each year. |

The WPA and Minnesota’s Greatest Generation |
| Held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Minnesota’s Greatest Generation lived through the pivotal decades of the Depression, the War and the Boom. Their contributions during difficult times leave a lasting legacy for future generations. During the Great depression of the 1930’s, President Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal” included many programs designed to get America back to work. The WPA, or Works Projects Administration, had a large presence in Little Falls, Minnesota, specifically at the boyhood home of famous aviator Charles A. Lindbergh. The Charles A. Lindbergh Historic Site and Lindbergh State Park will be working cooperatively to bring this event to the public. Throughout the day, programs will be available for visitors to learn more about the New Deal and its impact at both the historic site and state park. Visitors can see living history demonstrations of WPA workers and their projects, take a guided walking tour which highlights original WPA buildings, and can view period-appropriate 1930’s New Deal films in the visitor center theater. At 1 p.m., site manager Charles Pautler will staff will give a presentation on WPA projects in Little Falls, in the visitor center theater. House tours of the home will also be available, and visitors can view a special museum exhibit on the WPA and its role at Lindbergh Park in the Lindbergh house gallery. |

Living History Day |
| Held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Charles A. Lindbergh Historic Site. Visitors will learn that the Lindbergh Historic Site was once a moderate-sized farm, and tenants performed much of the work. Tenants took care of the Lindbergh Farm from 1901 into the 1920’s. A farmer named Gustav Gertz, who lived in the tenant’s house in 1917-1918, will share tales about the Lindbergh family, C.A. and his “radical” politics, and the farm and what it was like to be a citizen of German-descent in Minnesota during WWI. Another tenant was Mary Hannah Stevens who lived on the Lindbergh property from 1906 to 1913 and worked the farm with her husband. Mrs. Stevens was the mother of two boys and a friend to Evangeline Lindbergh. She will share inside stories about the Lindbergh family and about life in Little Falls at that time. Visitors will also meet young Lindbergh’s maternal grandmother, “Grandma Land”, who can let them into the house where they can experience the inner circle of Lindbergh family life. |
