"War & The North Star: Minnesotans Experience WWII" Kickoff |
Great River Regional Library (GRRL) is presenting a series of programs and exhibits about the experiences of Minnesotans in WWII called “War & The North Star: Minnesotans Experience WWII.” The kickoff event, including speakers, a display and a mobile Buseum with a self-contained high quality exhibit, will be at St. Cloud Public Library on Saturday, April 3, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. This will be followed by a Buseum tour that will visit each GRRL branch in April. The exhibits and speakers are organized by TRACES, a non-profit educational organization created to gather, preserve and present stories of people from the Midwest and Germany or Austria who encountered each other during WWII. Two speakers at St. Cloud will talk about their personal experience of WWII. Edith Lichtenstein Morgan was a child in a Jewish family forced to flee Germany, at one point traveling by foot, pushing their possessions in a doll’s baby carriage. They made their way via Switzerland, France, Spain and Portugal before securing passage to America, where they found shelter at the Scattergood Hostel for European Refugees near Iowa City. Eberhard Fuhr’s German-American family were suspected of being enemy aliens and were sent to Camp Crystal City in the Texas desert. Separated for a while from his parents, Fuhr witnessed the plight of Germans, Italians and other Europeans interned without legal representation or due process. Call (320) 650-2510 for more information. |
