 11/21/2014   Heartland BIG Read!
The Heartland BIG Read! is a Morrison County community and school project focused on celebrating literary arts. It makes a strong statement that our community places a high value on reading and the written word.

This project promotes literacy and builds an atmosphere of civic unity by generating enthusiasm for a common book, facilitating discussion opportunities and providing a community author event.

The book we are featuring is Orphan Train, a novel by Christina Baker Kline. It is a New York Times bestseller based on the orphan trains of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s that traveled from the East Coast to the Midwest carrying thousands of children to face futures determined only by hope and chance. It is a book with broad appeal but even more important, it has local historical significance. Ms Kline actually did research for her book in Little Falls! The local Franciscan convent has hosted reunions for orphan train riders, as one of their own, the late Sister Justina Bieganek, road one of these trains.

This is how the Heartland BIG Read! works:

1.Read the book and encourage others to read it! Books are available at Great River Regional Libraries and on sale at Great River Arts and all major book sellers. (You can even look for copies at the Little Free Libraries in town.)

2.Attend a book discussion event! Seven events at various locations and times are scheduled to give community members several options for joining a group. The dates and times will be noted in the Morrison County Record and at businesses around town. We can send the list to your organization by email for you to share.

3.Come to the GRA ( Great River Arts, 122 First Street SE, Little Falls ) on Friday, November 21st at 7:00pm and meet Christina Baker Kline. She will talk about her research, the writing process and answer questions about her books; as well as sign books so bring your copy along!
